Shanghai Wanghong Makeup & Hanfu Snap Photoshoot Review | Fairy Experience Near Yuyuan Garden
This is my review of getting wanghong makeup and a fairy-style snap photoshoot done in Shanghai. While planning my Shanghai trip, I first came across the term “Shanghai wanghong makeup.” After watching a video on YouTube about a Chinese fairy experience, I immediately thought, “I have to try this!” — and started searching right away.
Booking was done through WeChat. I contacted the account ID hyhsyuyuan, and with automatic translation enabled, there was no language barrier at all.

Booking and Payment Process
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Selected Package | 698 CNY (makeup + outfit + 35 photos included) |
| Payment Method | WeChat Pay QR code |
| Deposit | 100 CNY upfront |
| Location | 汉仪华裳汉服馆 (Yuyuan Branch) |
A few months before my Shanghai trip, I happened to watch a YouTube video about a fairy dress-up experience in Shanghai and immediately thought, “That looks so fun — I have to do it!” So I jumped straight into researching it.
I messaged the WeChat account I found in the YouTube comments (WeChat ID: hyhsyuyuan), and thanks to the automatic translation feature, we were able to communicate perfectly in our own languages.

The shop was clearly experienced — they sent over a price list right away.
I chose the first option at the top: 698 CNY.
- Makeup + outfit + 35 negatives + 35 original photos included
The booking process was straightforward:
- ✔️ Choose your desired package
- ✔️ Select your date and time → booking confirmed
For the deposit, I needed to pay 100 CNY via QR code. At first I thought, “What is this…?” — but when I clicked the QR code image, it opened directly inside WeChat for payment.
✨ It was my first taste of the WeChat Pay experience — truly a new world! ✨
Since I had already registered my payment method, it was: enter amount → enter payment PIN → transfer complete!
And just like that, the booking was done!
※ These days, booking through Klook is easier and more affordable.

Makeup and Hair Styling
The big day finally arrived!
Shooting location: 汉仪华裳汉服馆 (Yuyuan Branch)
When you visit the studio, you can either pick a hanfu (Chinese traditional outfit) directly from the display, or browse recommendations on a tablet.
The makeup was distinctly Chinese in style — glitter under the eyes, thin eyebrows, pink blush — quite different from what I normally wear.
- ✔️ Bringing your own cosmetics is more hygienic and reassuring
- ✔️ Puffs and brushes are shared; only those with sensitive skin are recommended to bring their own
I had looked up the address beforehand using photos they sent, so finding the place was easy. Once I stepped out of the building, I was immediately in the Yuyuan area.

At the studio, I could either pick an outfit from the ones on display or have the staff show me sample photos on a tablet and make recommendations.
- ✔️ I changed into the outfit and makeup began right away
- ✔️ Shared makeup tools are used, but those with sensitive skin are welcome to bring their own
- ✔️ I brought a few items myself, but ended up using the studio’s tools for everything except one eye brush
The puffs were soaking in water bottles, but thankfully I didn’t break out the next day!
I just left the makeup entirely up to the artist. Communication was simple — just basic instructions like “Look up” and “Close your eyes,” so there were no difficulties.
What the Makeup Was Like
- Drew on under-eye aegyo-sal (which I don’t naturally have — felt a bit awkward)
- Applied glitter under the eyes
- Covered and thinned out my eyebrows with concealer
- Added pink blush to the nose
It was really… different from my usual look. That said, she even attached cherry blossom petals to my hair, so she clearly put a lot of care into it!
After the makeup was done, it was time to choose a hairstyle. The staff showed me options on a tablet to help me decide.
When I looked in the mirror after everything was done…
Is this right…? 😅
I’m sure the retouching will sort it out… lol
- ✔️ Hair completed
- ✔️ Remaining balance paid (minus the deposit)
- ✔️ Photographer arrived → off to shoot!
The Shooting Process

I had assumed the photographer would be a man, but it turned out to be a woman.
With a heavy headpiece and a dress dragging along the floor, stepping carefully out of the studio felt… oddly mortifying.
Why did I sign up for this…?
Honestly, I was a little embarrassed — but once we arrived at the shooting spot, I noticed quite a few other people doing the same thing, and I felt much better.
There were even couples shooting together, one of them dressed in warrior attire. I thought it looked like a really fun couples’ activity!
After about a 3-minute walk, we arrived at the shooting location.

Starting the Shoot
The shoot finally began! 😯
The photographer brought an impressive collection of props — rabbit figurines, tanghulu (sugar-coated fruit skewers), and so much more packed into her bag. We shot a few frames, then moved to a new spot, switching props and poses each time.
The photographer gave great direction, so even without a shared language, the whole session was fun and smooth.

Shoot Details
- Duration: Approximately 1 hour
- Props used: Rabbit figurines, tanghulu, and more
- Communication: Directed through gestures and demonstrations — no language needed
The photographer even put my phone in her bag and took it out for me every time we moved — such a thoughtful touch.
She kept asking me to do a lot of finger poses. 😂 (Very on-brand for Chinese wanghong aesthetics!)
Since it was winter, I wore a cape while moving between spots and took it off for the actual shots. It was cold, but not unbearably so.

End of Shoot & Photo Review
After the shoot wrapped up, we sat on a bench for a moment while she scrolled through all the photos to show me. She asked if there was anything I wanted to reshoot.
I was tired, so I said it was fine and we wrapped things up.
- ✔️ Returned to the studio and had my hair taken down
- ✔️ Changed back into my own clothes
- ✔️ Headed home!
It was a genuinely fun experience. 🙂
Reviewing Photos and Receiving Retouched Images
The photos arrived by email almost the same evening.
Since I was traveling on a 3GB/day SIM, I only got to properly look through them after returning home.
I was originally told I’d receive 35 negatives, but it seemed like they just sent all the originals in full. However, the retouched versions weren’t included, so I sent a message asking:
“How do I receive the 6 retouched photos?”
They replied saying I should pick the ones I wanted retouched and they’d send them over. I selected my favorites and sent them in — but after a week went by with no response, I followed up again. They sent the retouched photos that same evening.
In the end, a few of the photos turned out to be absolute life shots. 😊
After seeing the final results, I felt a little shy — but I had some photos I truly loved, making it a wonderful memory overall.
