Day 1: Arrival & Lagos City & Food Tour
📍 Stroll through Lagos Old Town
After dropping my bags at the hotel, I headed to the Old Town. Although Lagos is a small city, it is a place where just taking a walk makes you feel good, as old-fashioned streets, charming shops, and cozy cafes are well harmonized.

In particular, the Old Town is a great place to look around while walking leisurely, with its pastel-toned buildings, Portuguese tiles, and narrow alleys. There are many pretty souvenir shops, cafes, and bakeries throughout the streets. Since there are many pedestrian-only sections, I could enjoy a quiet atmosphere without cars.
A place you must visit in the Lagos Old Town is the Igreja de Santo António. It is an 18th-century Baroque church where you can see the gold-decorated altar and wood carvings inside. Although small in scale, the interior is elaborate and beautiful, making it a good place to stop by for a moment.

Another place is the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira. It is a 17th-century defensive coastal fort located at the entrance of Lagos Harbor, and there is a small museum that can be explored in a short time. Since it is located on the boundary between the sea and the Old Town in the middle of the walking route, I recommend going up on the fortress walls to look at the harbor scenery!
📍 A Guilda – Gift Shop

In Portugal, Portuguese tiles and Portuguese ceramics are famous. At the gift shop A Guilda, located in the Old Town, there are many gift items such as handmade products, spice containers, and pretty mugs. I happily found a cinnamon powder container shaped like an egg tart here!
📍 Best Egg Tart Restaurant in Lagos – Padaria Central

A food that cannot be missed in Portugal is the egg tart (Pastel de Nata). After visiting five egg tart shops in Lagos Old Town, the best egg tart in Lagos I decided on was Padaria Central. The outside is crispy, and the inside has an impressive soft and heavy filling. It is a bakery frequently visited by locals, so if there are freshly baked egg tarts, don’t miss them!
📍 Recommended Lagos Restaurant – BUeNI Restaurante
I had dinner at BUeNI Restaurante in the city center. I went there because the Google ratings were so good, and I tasted the “chicken of my life” here! This is a restaurant with a fun concept. When you order a menu, they sprinkle a bucket full of peanuts on the table.

While waiting for the food, you can peel and eat the peanuts and just throw the shells on the floor. The waiting time was not boring at all and was fun. As a Korean from a powerhouse country of fried chicken, I am quite picky about chicken dishes, but the Piri Piri chicken here is counted as one of the best foods I ate in Portugal.
Piri Piri Chicken is one of the representative national dishes of Portugal. It originally originated from Mozambique, Africa, which was a Portuguese colony. Portuguese people brought the spicy Piri Piri sauce from there and combined it with chicken to develop it into its current form. Because Piri Piri sauce is made by mixing spicy peppers (African bird’s eye chili), garlic, vinegar, lemon juice, and olive oil, it has a spicy taste that Koreans like.

Along with Piri Piri chicken, the grilled octopus dish is a signature menu. Unlike the chewy octopus you can taste in Korea, the taste of the very soft octopus that disappears after only a few chews was excellent. After the meal, they even provided Limoncello as a service, allowing me to end the day on a good note.
Day 2: Coastal Cliff Hiking
📍 Ponta da Piedade – Cliff Hiking Course
On the morning of the second day, after finishing breakfast at the accommodation, I started walking along the Ponta da Piedade coastal cliff hiking course, a representative landmark of Lagos. This course is about 2km long, so it’s not long, but if you walk while slowly enjoying the scenery, it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

You can move relatively easily using the decks and stairs installed along the coastline, and the spectacular sight created by the strangely shaped rocks and emerald sea unfolding in between truly draws admiration. The coastal cliffs in this area were formed by erosion by wind and waves over many years, and the limestone-based rocks form unique shapes.
Specifically, tunnels, arches, and independent rock pillars created by erosion and weathering create a characteristic landscape unique to the Lagos coast, and it can be said to be a landform representing the natural beauty of the Algarve region in southern Portugal.

The sheer coastal cliffs of the Algarve were so wonderful that exclamations naturally burst out! Especially when I went in spring to early summer, the harmony of the fields filled with green and yellow light and the sea was a superb view.
I especially recommend saving Camilo Beach Viewpoint, Marinha da Piedade, and Farol da Ponta da Piedade (Lighthouse) on Google Maps and visiting them! Below the cliffs, there are sea caves and arched rocks that can only be accessed by boat tours, so if you have time, I also recommend combining a boat tour or kayaking.
I trekked the Ponta da Piedade coastal cliffs in April. At this time, it is the season when yellow wildflowers bloom in abundance, so the cliffs were waving with yellow waves, which was truly beautiful.

📍 Benagil Cave Kayak Tour
After the coastal cliff hiking, if you have enough time, exploring the nearby Benagil Cave is also recommended. This cave is called “a cathedral made by nature” due to its structure surrounded by a circular skylight, yellow sand beach, and rock walls, and is considered an icon of the Algarve.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to access directly through trekking from Lagos, so you must book a boat tour or kayak tour starting from Portimão or Carvoeiro.
In particular, the Algarve coast has many places where you can enjoy the scenery of the emerald transparent sea besides Benagil Cave. I was scared before going, but since there were many good reviews, I applied for a tour and went. I chose a product departing from Portimão, which is a 30-minute drive from Lagos, and I was very satisfied. I booked it because it was on sale for 18 euros, which I thought was too cheap(?), and I really liked experiencing the Algarve coast directly for an hour and a half.

I later found out that they don’t operate if the weather conditions are bad, but luckily the weather conditions allowed me to visit Benagil Cave through a boat tour. I felt like I had come to an alien planet! If you have time, I also highly recommend enjoying the Algarve coast through a kayak tour starting from Benagil.
Lagos Accommodation Recommendation (Carvi Beach Hotel)
The accommodation I stayed at in Lagos was the Carvi Beach Hotel.

The reason I chose this hotel was that it was located right in front of the Ponta da Piedade coastal cliffs. When you open the window, an ocean view overlooking Praia Dona Ana beach unfolds, and especially during sunset, the sunset viewed from the room was truly like a painting.
The interior of the hotel was generally clean and quiet, making it a good place to rest comfortably during the trip. The room size was quite generous for a hotel in a small European city.
There is a terrace and a fairly large swimming pool on the rooftop, so if the weather had been better, I would have spent more time tanning in the pool. However, it is about a 15-minute walk away from the city center (Old Town), so you have to pass through a slightly dark road when walking at night. But from May to September in Europe, the sun sets late, and since it is a road where many tourists pass by anyway, I didn’t feel it was scary or dangerous.

Breakfast was served on the top floor, so the view was really great. It was a simple breakfast but had everything like fruit, bread, cheese, yogurt, and ham. Personally, I liked the location very, very much because it was closer to the coastal cliffs than the Old Town!

FAQ (Lagos, Portugal 1-Night 2-Day Weekend Trip)
Q1. How much can I see in Lagos, Portugal in 1 night and 2 days?
A. A walk through the Old Town + Ponta da Piedade cliff hiking + 1~2 famous restaurants is sufficient. If you include the Benagil Cave tour, travel time increases, so it’s better to focus Day 2 on the tour.
Q2. What is the best travel route for a Lagos trip?
A. Day 1: Old Town (walking) + dinner at a local spot; Day 2: Ponta da Piedade (morning) + Benagil tour (lunch~afternoon). Separating “City/Nature” makes the route clean.
Q3. Is the Ponta da Piedade hiking possible for beginners?
A. Yes. Decks and stairs are well-maintained, so the difficulty is not high, but the wind can be strong, so sneakers with good grip are recommended.
Q4. What is the most beautiful time for Ponta da Piedade hiking?
A. In the morning, there is less backlight, so photos are clean, and sunset has a great atmosphere. To avoid wind and crowds, early morning is the most comfortable.
Q5. Can I go directly to Benagil Cave from Lagos?
A. It is difficult to enter the inside of the cave by walking/trekking from Lagos. Usually, it is accessed by boat or kayak tours departing from Portimão or Carvoeiro.
Q6. Which is better for the Benagil Cave: boat vs. kayak?
A. Kayaking is physically demanding but allows you to enjoy it closer and longer, leading to higher satisfaction. Boats are comfortable and time-efficient, fitting well into a 1-night 2-day Lagos schedule.
Q7. Are Benagil tours canceled due to weather?
A. Yes. They can be canceled depending on weather conditions such as wind and waves. If your schedule is short, place it early on Day 2 and be sure to check the cancellation/refund policy when booking.
Q8. When is the best time to go to Lagos egg tart (Pastel de Nata) shops?
A. The timing of freshly baked tarts makes a big difference in taste. Also, many bakeries in Lagos are closed on Sundays, so it’s safe to eat them on Day 1 if possible.
Q9. Do Lagos restaurants require reservations?
A. During peak season (summer) or Friday/Saturday evenings, there may be a wait, so a reservation is good if available. If booking is difficult, a strategy of going right at opening time is effective.
Q10. Is it better to stay near the Old Town or near the cliffs in Lagos?
A. If “night views/restaurants/night walks” are important, the Old Town area is convenient. If you focus on “cliff hiking/beach views/nature,” the Ponta da Piedade side is advantageous for the route. For a short trip like 1 night and 2 days, staying near the cliffs is more efficient.
